Discovery Guide

About the Role

La Nube’s Discovery Guides are public-facing learning facilitators who cultivate and model creative, imaginative exploration and play within the museum. They lead activities and programs in several designated areas of the museum, with focus on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math), participate in museum special events and represent La Nube at various community events throughout the year. Discovery Guides are outgoing, organized, playful, and demonstrate an enthusiasm for engaging with diverse audiences comprised of children and their caregivers experience. They also get involved in all aspects of guest relations, ticketing, event rentals, and retail through interactive and excellent customer service. The Discovery Guide is responsible for ensuring an excellent guest experience in all areas of guest interaction. This position must foster a pleasant and educational experience for all who enter our establishment. Team members must be able to work collaboratively with others to complete collective objectives. This position must be committed to providing a safe environment for children and families to learn without negative undertones in service or fear of being judged for differences in ability or level of education.

It is important to note that this position will be transformative in nature, meaning that one part of your day, you may be assigned to guide a tour; the next part, you may be involved in ticketing or retail sales. Whoever is chosen for this position must be willing and able to adapt to changes, as this will not be your run-of-the-mill summer or part time job.

If you are adaptable, able to go with the flow and adjust processes as needed, this job might be for you! Must have experience working with children and /or families and diverse audiences. This position requires personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and patience. Must have excellent communication skills, preferably in English and Spanish. Must be available weekdays, weekends, and holidays, as assigned.

Responsibilities:

• Perform opening and closing duties and execute cash and charge transactions accurately.

• Assist with receiving inventory and inventory tracking.

• Managing, cleaning, stocking, and maintaining visual merchandising standards.

• Welcomes guests and provides them with information on admissions and membership pricing, daily programs, exhibits, and events to facilitate an excellent guest experience and foster repeat visits.

• Sell admission tickets, memberships, and other products in accordance with policy, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in transactions.

• Facilitate the guest experience by managing visitor flow, resetting exhibits, interacting with and engaging guests in exhibits, experiences, events, and programming.

• Act as museum concierge, assisting guests with questions or directions and welcoming groups and birthday party/event participants.

• Monitor museum exhibit areas and amenities, making sure they are clean, well-stocked and reporting any issues to the appropriate team.

• Must have reliable transportation and at or over 16 years of age.

• Supports operations to provide an exceptional visitor experience.

• Work in assigned areas including admissions, group admissions, guest facing facilitation, and retail.

• Works with other departments; events and parties, community outreach, or helping facilitate education programs.

• Support museum events and programming as needed.

• Effectively implement La Nube’s policies and procedures.

• Contribute to a positive culture and work environment.

• Engaging presentation, teaching, and public-speaking skills.

• Experience working with neurodivergent audiences and children with learning differences.

Physical Requirements/Occupational Hazard

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for extended periods of up to 8 hours and must have good communication skills (i.e., communicate clearly and effectively in both written and spoken English). Must be able to see well and able to read fine print. Must be able to lift boxes weighing up to 25 pounds – maintaining the museum and interacting with guests requires standing, walking, kneeling, crawling, and playing, stooping, bending, and crawling as well as carrying and/or lifting materials.
